Singapore was once named Singapura meaning "Lion City" and Singapore's traditional name being "Temasek" which is "Sea Town". In 1960s, the Merlion was made into the icon of Singapore as the name Merlion represented Singapore perfectly. "Mer" depicting the sea and "Lion" which represents "Singa" which was the front of the name of Singapore.
The pattern is a simple version of the Merlion Scales. Since young when I saw the Merlion statue, I always thought it was a sea monster that protects the country and hence that is why we featured the Scales which protects its body against harm.
This story is about how safe Singapore is and perhaps it is due to Merlion being its guardian.
